Objectives

  • To model and simulate the interaction between shear and particle size distribution in a vertical tubular membrane.
  • To model and simulate the interaction between shear and the formed cake layer which is built up.
  • To study the effect of the sludge structure on the flux

Background

As the CFD model helps in understanding the flow behavior at the membrane surface, the population balance models (PBM) allow describing the dynamics of particle size distributions (PSD). The PSD is considered critical for fouling control, as it interferes with the cake layer permeability. Further, the applied membrane shear directly influences the particle size distribution. Hence, a CFD model coupled to PBM allows to understand this interaction and better control these systems.
