Modelling fate of pesticides in river systems (VITO)

Monitoring and modelling the dynamic fate and behaviour of pesticides in river systems at catchment scale


During spring 2004 and 2005, an intensive pesticide monitoring campaign was set up containing 8 hour composite samples of river water and monthly depth profiles of the sediment. The data were used to calibrate and validate a SWAT model (Soil and Water Assessment Tool) for pesticide supply towards the river. By extending the SWAT codes for point losses and buffer strips, a comparison of the effectiveness of mitigation measures could be made. Processes in the river were modeled by means of an extended RWQM1 model (River Water Quality Model Nį1). Both tools can be used in realistic risk assessments of pesticides at catchment scale.
