During spring 2004 and 2005, an intensive pesticide monitoring campaign was set up containing 8 hour composite samples of river water and monthly depth profiles of the sediment. The data were used to calibrate and validate a SWAT model (Soil and Water Assessment Tool) for pesticide supply towards the river. By extending the SWAT codes for point losses and buffer strips, a comparison of the effectiveness of mitigation measures could be made. Processes in the river were modeled by means of an extended RWQM1 model (River Water Quality Model N°1). Both tools can be used in realistic risk assessments of pesticides at catchment scale.
